Self-assembly is a pervasive phenomenon in which a disordered system of pre-existing components forms an organized structure or pattern as a consequence of specific, local interactions among the components themselves, without external direction. In particular, DNA self-assembly is the science of organizing DNA sequences into desired shape by annealing several synthetically prepared oligonucleotides in a test tube.
